Plouzeau, Perles Brut Rose Loire Valley, France $25
The bouquet shows the charming Cabernet Franc character in its mix of white cherries, zesty tangerine, currant leaf, lovely soil tones, and a tinge of smoky white pepper in the upper register. The wine is fresh, crisp, and nicely balanced on the palate, with frothy mousse, just-picked red fruit flavors, and a distinctly savory core. It has a nice length and grip on its vibrant finish.
Domaine Couet, Coteaux Du Giennois Loire Valley, France $20
Coteaux du Giennois is a smaller appellation directly north of Pouilly-Fume and across the river from Sancerre. Here, they produce Sauvignon Blanc much like their neighbors, but in a fashion less dense and more approachable. Grapefruit and lemon and a hint of quince and white flowers. It’s zesty on the palate with a mineral core and a clean, lingering finish that gives hints of gunflint. 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
Mas De Valeriole, “Beauduc” Marselan Sud Ouest, France $24
Made entirely from Marselan, a crossing of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, which is particularly well suited to the climate of south France. Appetizing black and dark red fruits, wispy spice, and a subtle undercurrent of savory earthiness, this steel-aged wine is clean, juicy and beautifully balanced. No-added-sulfur and aged in stainless-steel revealing a vibrant fresh, but dark and brooding wine. Meow!
Dom. De L’Accent, “Una Notte” Grenache Languedoc, France $32
This Grenache Noir is crafted meticulously hands off. Just one-night (Una-Notte) of maceration. Made with indigenous yeasts and as minimal additions as possible. Grown at 350 m altitude, it holds a light red color and has a zesty profile. 100% Grenache with no oak! Highlighted with mountain freshness, herbal notes, and bright red fruit, a pinch of classy funk in the finish of this natty wine.
