Cadre, Grüner Veltliner “Band of Stones” San Luis Obispo, California $24
A family-driven Edna Valley project founded by John and Lucy Niven to showcase cool-climate whites from the San Luis Obispo Coast, one of California’s coolest AVAs, shaped by Pacific fog and wind. “Band of Stones” is 100% Grüner Veltliner, sourced mainly from Paragon Vineyard blocks with limestone, sandstone, shale, and mudstone, which help give the wine its mineral edge. Notes of salty citrus, grapefruit, white pepper, ginger, jasmine, and a stony, zesty finish, with stainless-steel fermentation and about 7 months on lees adding texture.
Forlorn Hope, Queen of the Sierras Co-Ferment, Sierra Foothills, California $24
Forlorn Hope was founded in 2005 by Matthew Rorick and is known for organically farmed, low-intervention wines from Rorick Heritage Vineyard in Calaveras County, where steep limestone and schist soils at high elevation contribute brightness and aromatic lift. Made from estate fruit and fermented with native yeasts, then bottled with minimal intervention. Co-ferments like this are meant to emphasize freshness, texture, and layered aromatics rather than a single-varietal profile, so the style is typically lively, savory, and a little unconventional. Possibly chillable, if that’s your thing.
Ancient Peaks, Zinfandel Paso Robles, California $24
Rooted in the historic Santa Margarita Ranch in Paso Robles, where Margarita Vineyard has become known for producing acclaimed Zinfandel from some of the region’s coolest growing conditions. The wine is 100% Zinfandel, and the vineyard’s volcanic, shale, and rocky alluvial soils help shape its character. In the glass, it leans plush and fruit-forward with raspberry, cherry, plum, vanilla, black pepper, toasted oak, and leather, then finishes with lively acidity and spice. Aged 16 to 19 months in French and American oak.
Frog’s Leap, Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford-Napa, California $74
Frog’s Leap has built its reputation in Rutherford, Napa Valley around organic farming, dry farming, and a restrained style that prioritizes balance over heavy oak or ripeness. Gravelly soils and the famous “Rutherford Dust” character add an earthy, cocoa-like savory note. With notes of cassis, black cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco, black olive, and fine-grained tannins, with the structure. Frog’s Leaep Cabernets are built to last 10, 20, or even 30 years.
