Robust Regions

We try to entrance the palate this wine tasting. With flavors that are racy, radical, and downright robust.  We enter the Gaillac region with a Spanish blanc. Only to lead to an amazing Sancerre, one of my rock stars Sauvignon Blanc from Loire Valley France. Then to another French bad=ass Chablis which is 100% Chardonnay with very little to no oak. Then to the reds which have been chosen for their regional strengths. Montepulciano is from Tuscany and has a reputation of being more delightful than the king Sangiovese. But we cap the evening of with an Amarone. The special blended wine from Verona, Also the birthplace of Risotto! Hear all about these Robust wines

Alberte, Ribeiro Spain, $19

This wine is from northern Spain and made from two RAD grapes called Treixadura (80%) and Albariño (20%). An opulent, fresh, exciting wine with notes of lime zest, honeysuckle vine, and aspen flowers. Notes of minerals, stormy skies, and is deep as a well.

Domaine Girard, Sancerre, Loire Valley France $25

This is a classic (and cheapish) Sancerre that took me a year of tasting to find. 100% Sauvignon Blanc that has all the racy tones of its lineage, but a bit calmer that its New Zealand cousin. Harvested by hand and fermented with wild yeasts (a rarity in Sancerre). Only 2.5-hectare plot on a steep slope, in Chaddoux. Stony clay over limestone soils.

William Favre, Chablis “Champs Royeaux”, Burgundy France $27

William Favre’s Champs Royaux Chablis is impressively precise, delivering a nose of citrus fruits, flowers, green apple and flinty flavors of wet stone in the mid-palate with a beautifully clean finish. Fresh, supple, it is marked by mineral notes, typical of the appellation.

 exhibits excellent crispness and textures on the palate. Its aromas and flavors of crisp core fruit, chalky notes, and earthy tones.

Novacorte, Montepulciano, Tuscany Italy $18

 Enjoyed the smooth velvety feeling in the mouth, combined with a rich, full taste. Not strong in tannins, low in animal nose. The color was deep red.  better than average wine. Lots o body. Nose of blackberries, pepper, and herbs

Villa Leone, Amarone, Verona Italy

In fair Verona where we lay our scene, a tale of three grapes. Molinara, Rondinella

 and Corvina are the blend in the famous wine Amarone! Often given the appassimento

 treatment. The grapes are dried out often leading to extracted colors, flavors and alcohol.

This wine has a regional food pairing of Risotto.
