Columbia Valley
We need a few wines to help transition into the PNW weather. So, let’s try a swath of rich Columbia Valley Wines. First, we compare Roussanne, a grape from Rhone Valley, France that grows well in Washington. Full bodied, crisp and bright with stone fruits. Then we get into three reds that are deep in color, flavor, and excitement. Can’t get much closer to home than the Washington Wine Academy of West Seattle: Student made – professor guided. We will try there Syrah. Then, on to chugging a big blend of four warm climate grapes created in a European style from an awesome winery: Locus. We finish with a lovely wine that is thick and lush. Perfect for Fire pits, stargazing or any activity that requires no activity.

Novelty Hill, “Stillwater Creek” Roussanne, Columbia Valley $22
Bright and zesty, with fresh pear, honey and elegant floral notes wrapped around a citrus core. Juicy and lush on the palate, with a long, flavorful finish.
Sonder, Roussanne, Yakima $22
Sonder is a low fi winemaker. Sustainable practices. The Roussanne is crisp with honeysuckle, pear, and a pinch of herbs. Full bodied wine with a long finish.
Northwest Wine Academy, Syrah, Columbia Valley $15
From the student minds and professors mind comes the NWWA’s Syrah. This full-bodied wine exhibits rich aromas of black fruits, spices and volcanic rocks! The hard rocks, not the molten stuff. The powerful flavors of dried black fruit are followed by anise, black pepper and hibiscus.
Locus, Red, Columbia Valley $25
A Southern Rhone-style blend from high-elevation fruit. A European style but with ripe Washington fruit grown in Columbia Valley. Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre, and Grenache. Look for aromas of plumb, coffee, and eucalyptus. A warm wine with herbs and black fruit in the finish. Let’s talk Garrigue!
William Church, Bishops Blend, Columbia Valley $24
Cab, Merlot, Malbec, SYRAH, and Petit Verdot: The classic Washington “Bord-Feaux” blend. We Washingtonians put Syrah in everything it seems… This wine is deep brick red. The palate is loaded with wild blackberry, vanilla dark cherry, plum, boysenberry, anise, blackberry, and wet stone. An easy drinking versatile wine that goes well with many types of dishes. “Best served chilled” says the winemaker…. We will see about that!
