Slope Life, “Downshift” Chardonnay Columbia Valley, Washington $16
Slope Life is an approachable, sustainably farmed wine brand from Gård, grown in the Royal Slope AVA of Columbia Valley. Starts with yellow apple, lemon zest, and white flowers. Opens up with lively tropical and citrus flavors with nice weight but not to rich.. Finishes with a mineral touch. Destemmed and lightly pressed. Aged in neutral oak puncheons for 18 months.
Valicoff Estates, “Ivan de Isla” Red Columbia Valley, Washington $21
Award winning winemaker Robert Smasne is the winemaker for all Valicoff wines, including the first blend, named Ivan de Isla Red, named after Mr Valicoff’s grandchildren. This is a classic PNW blend of Cab, Malbec and Syrah. Deep purple, with aromas of boysenberry, and huckleberry. A little oak aging offers hints of wood and vanilla.
Upsidedown, “The Method” Red Columbia Valley, Washington $29
Always on the top tier of my favorites list. A tip of the cap to Super Tuscans, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Nebbiolo (33%) and Sangiovese (22%). It opens with fruity and alluring aromas of blackberry and cherry cola and follows through similar ripe and delicious flavors, backed by black cherry-skin tannins that show refinement. Proceeds of this wine benefit The Chill Foundation, which helps youth grow and overcome personal challenges through board sports.
Powers, “Sheridan Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Yakima, Washington $36
Complex aromatics with notes of dried cherries, plum, mocha, garden herbs, and butterscotch. The palate features layered flavors of plum, raspberry tartlet, and chocolate cherry cordial, complemented by baking spices for a concentrated yet delicate mouthfeel. The structure is marked by fine, complex tannins, bright fruit intensity, minerality, oak, and a pronounced acidity, capturing the distinctive character of Sheridan Vineyard. Well-regarded for its balance, depth, and high-quality fruit expression from the Yakima Valley.
