Domaine Du Mont Epin, "Vire Clesse” Blanc, Burgundy  $23

A fine-as-can-be Chardonnay. A white Burgundy, a Blanc du Bourgogne. 

From the newly named (1999) and elegant “Vire Clesses” which is inside a region of Burgundy called Macon. Only Chardonnay is allowed here. This wine should prove to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. Scouts honor.

Couvent des Thorins, Moulin a Vent, Rouge, Beaujolias   $29

This is a Beaujolais “CRU”, one of the major wine towns in this region. There are 10, and “Moulin-a-Vent” (windmill) is one of the best. Shimmering ruby. Powerful blackberry, cherry and licorice aromas are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals and violets, bitter cherry and dark berry flavors enlivened by a snap of cracked pepper. Slowly building tannins frame the finish, which lingers with very good, dark-fruit-driven persistence. But, you be the judge.

Domaine des Pasquiers, Sablet, Cotes du Rhone Villages   $17

Whiffs of raspberries and lilac petals introduce this fresh, fruity blend of Grenache (65%), Syrah (25%) and Mourvèdre (10%). Matured nine months in cement tanks, the quaffable, softly tannic red highlights primary, berry-cherry flavors.

Domaine Montrose, Rose, Languedoc  $14

65% grenache, 25% cabernet sauvignon, 10% syrah. A soft pink hue. A palate of red berries and peaches, with spicy overtones. Elegant wine combining roundness and freshness. To be drunk young. You know, not to be drunk young… but drunk young….
