Mark Ryan, Lu & Oly, “We Sat by the Ocean” White, Yakima Valley $28
60% Viognier, 40% Chardonnay.
Ripe citrus aromas, nectarine, and passion fruit. Fresh with lively acidity, the palate has warm tropical fruit, stone fruits, and white floral notes balanced with a touch of oak. We Sat by the Ocean is medium-bodied and elegant, with a lengthy finish.
Mark Ryan, Boardtrack Racer, “The Shift” GSM, Columbia Valley $25
68% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre.
Brilliant purple color and aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, and violet candies entice a first sip and blossom with time in the glass. The palate of blueberry, plum, vanilla, and cocoa is textured with lush fruit and vibrant with juicy acidity. A balanced and refined finish makes this wine entirely delicious and exciting to share.
Some of Washington State’s finest vineyards have provided fruit for the 2017 Dissident. Cabernet sauvignon from Ciel du Cheval, Phinny Hill, and Quintessence and merlot from Klipsun and Red Willow are the foundation of this wine. The same vineyards, barrels and attention to detail go into crafting the Dissident as go into every other wine in the Mark Ryan program. It is aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak.
Mark Ryan, Crazy Mary, Red Mountain $60
100% Mourvèdre. Ciel du Cheval and Angela's Vineyard.
The winter of 2014/15 was extremely difficult and caused significant damage throughout many of the vineyards in eastern Washington. One of the casualties of this extreme weather was our block of Mourvedre at Ciel du Cheval. The vine damage was so severe that we had to stop producing Mourvedre as a varietal wine while the vines recovered. Finally, in 2017 the recovery was complete. Mourvèdre is a varietal that we all love to work with. Its aromatic prole is similar to Syrah but it contains additional elements that make the resulting wine truly unique. It finishes primary and malolactic fermentation and is aged for 18 months in 50% new 228-liter thick staved French oak barrels. It has lots of bloody blueberry, ground pepper, and leafy herbs notes as well as a kiss of tobacco in a deep, rounded, sexy style. It is one seriously good wine.
Mark Ryan, Old Vines, Columbia Valley $65
98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot. Klipsun, Red Willow and Olsen vineyards
The 2016 Old Vines cabernet sauvignon honors some of the oldest and most well-respected vineyards in the state. At the core, Klipsun offers powerful Red Mountain character with intense dark fruits, excellent palate weight and exquisite texture. Red Willow brings the savory, old-world charm of the cooler climate in the Yakima Valley. Petit Verdot from Olsen Vineyard provides mouth filling flavors of sweet fruit. Old vines are more self-regulating in the vineyard, offering lighter crops, smaller berries and extremely concentrated aromatics and flavors. Our job in the cellar is to carefully extract these qualities without going too far and creating a wine that is unapproachable and hard. 21 months in 100% new French oak. One of the more plush, and sweetly fruited wines in the lineup, it has terrific black fruits, violets, flowers, and blood orange aromas, medium to full body, no hard edges, and sweet tannins. HOLY COW!!!
